G&L L-2000, made in USA 1996, natural. Leo Fender designed the first ever solid body electric bass, the Precision Bass, launching in 1951. G&L was Leo Fender's last offerings to the world, working alongside longtime collaborator George Fullerton... hence, G&L for George and Leo. The L-2000 is the natural evolution of the Stingray design, although it has it's own distinct touches and feel too. It feels great: the neck is arrow-straight and super stable, with a comfy C style shape and fairly tall frets. The high mass bridge and sturdy tuners mean it holds tune with gusto, and the ash and maple combo makes for a resonant, responsive feel. The tone is huge: punchy and precise, very tight and tuneful through the lows, extremely clear and brilliant on the top. The EQ and switching means you can get all sorts of tones out of it, from vintage Jazz and P style stuff to Stingray growl to popping modern metal heft; it does it a lot of things well. The ash body is on full display under the natural finish, it definitely has a strong look. These early black-plate G&L basses are really terrific instruments and surely a pretty safe bet to creep up in value in coming years. L-yeah.
